Fertile Earth Emerging - Plant the seeds of your desires
As mother earth begins to thaw, we have a magical window of time to think about our deepest desires.
Maybe we want a new romance, a new baby or a new job - whatever our desire is; spring will support us in its blossoming.
But before we begin planting our seeds of intent, we need to make space for the new. Conception requires us to be receptive, but if we're so full of the old, the new cannot take root.
Just like the earth needs to thaw before planting season begins, you may still have frozen ground in your life that requires defrosting. Where might you be disallowing energy to flow freely?
Sometimes, what we desire most seems farthest from our reach. This is likely because we are frozen by past failures or heartaches. In order to manifest our hearts desires, we need to unfreeze our emotions. By allowing ourselves to fully feel our feelings, we begin to heal.
I'd like to share with you a simple and beautiful Buddhist technique to unfreeze our emotions.
The first step in practicing Tonglen, is to notice when you feel the impulse to push away difficult emotions. When you feel your heart closing down, or you notice your desire to run away from a painful emotion, stop. Breathe in with the feeling of pain, sadness, fear, anger, resentment, judgment, or any other difficult emotion. Accepting it, and taking responsibility for whatever IT is, allows the healing to take place. Then breathe out, LOVE.
You can practice Tonglen for yourself and for humanity. For example, you're walking down the street and you see the pain of another human being. Instead of rushing by, you actually breathe in with the wish that this person can be free of suffering, and breathe out sending them loving-kindness and compassion straight from your heart. If seeing that other person's pain brings up fear or anger or confusion, which often happens, start doing Tonglen for yourself and all the other people who are stuck in the very same way.
These days I'm using Tonglen whenever I notice my self-talk. If the voice in my head is complaining or criticizing or just being plain negative - I ask myself, what is the feeling I am blocking here? Then I breathe in that feeling and exhale love for everyone who is blocking that same emotion.
Try practicing Tonglen for the rest of the month as you prepare to plant the seeds of your desire. Pay special attention to your blocks - are they connected with what you desire most? If they are, tell your subconscious mind you're ready to heal these blocks.
Use the one-minute breath to breathe life into your intentions. Inhale slowly for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, and exhale for 5 seconds. Continue for at least 1 minute and notice how you feel.
If you're trying to conceive, practice this breath before engaging sexually. To increase intimacy and promote conscious relaxation, practice the one-minute breath with your partner. The intention of this breathing technique is to increase your receptivity - making room for the new to take root.
Open yourself up to the infinite possibilities of creation. The universal life force resides within you and all around you. All you need to do is breathe it in.
